Mutual connection between your state of consciousness, and what is happening to you is not always immediately obvious. Connection, the correlation between what is inside you, and what is happening to you, or what you attract into your life.
Moreover, what is happening to you is not your destiny. And people think that their fate is determined precisely by what is happening to them: 'What's happening to me, defines my life'.
Your destiny is determined by how you react to what's happening. And what happens after that is determined by how you react to what is happening to you right now.
That way, when something bad happens to you, how you look at it, and when something goes wrong and you react negatively to it, in doing so you attract the next negative event. If you react to this with acceptance, if you accept it as: 'It is, what it is', then the next event will reflect that state of mind.
Many people are caught in an endless stream of 'bad' events that happen to them. They don't realize that at any moment there is a possibility to get rid of it and change their life, they just need to react differently to what is happening to them.
Your reaction to the events that are happening in the present moment, and not what is happening, determines your future.
